This summer I had the great pleasure to visit and photograph the beautiful design hotel 11 Howard during my summer holiday in New York. With it’s very casual luxury, 11 Howard is destined to become a classic. This innovative hotel combines cutting – edge Scandinavian design with oicially conscious hyperlocalism. More than just an ideal vantage point for downtown exploration, the property is an art spectacle in itself and a community hub partnered with a range of local business and nonprofits. 11 Howard describes its raison d’être as “conscious hospitality”. This begins with the hotel’s design by Space Copenhagen, a Danish firm known for its out-of-the-ordninary approach to interior spaces. 11 Howard is Space’s first project of its kind in New York, and a true standout in the city’s hotel world, with an emphasis not just in form, but on long-term function. The design team has gutted a characterless structure, reinventing the interiors with a dose of Scandinavian minmalism. The rooms contain custom furniture and lightning by Danish brands Mads Raaschou and Gubi, with a few pieces by Sapce Copenhagen themselves, as well as the oak-plank floors with soft natural bamboo area rugs.
11 Howard has reinvented social spaces, making them multifunctional and moving them to the second floor, as true extensions of the guest rooms. With plentiful tables and chairs, The Library is an ideal place to work, meet, sip tea in the afternoon, or unwind with a cocktail in the evening. The Library features the iconic Charlottenborg chair designed by Arne Jacobsen (Sika Design), Stay Sofa, Stay Lounge Chair by Gubii and other furnitures collected from around the world.
The Danish Oliver Gustav is a creative consulent with focus on aesthetic development, art, interior and exterior. His approach to interiors is artisanal and thoughtful. He creates spaces that convey a quite and yet dramatic atmosphere, where the stark and modern are contrasted against rare antique findsand exquisite curiosities. From his gallery in New York which is placed at the same addrss as 11 Howard, Oliver Gustav offers unique and limited edition pieces , from carefully curated edit of international designers and artists.
The rooms on 11 Howard features custom-made wall lamps by Gubi.
With arched windows facing Howard Street, 11 Howard’s bar and loung welcomes guests to work, mingle and relax. From lihtt and open to sensual and inviting, the bar’s ambiance transformers throughout the day. The blond is a stylsih place to kick off a night in new York, as dark woods, subdues colors, low lighting, and gold accents lend a seductive edge to the sapce, a bronze animal masks glint in the sahdows. The space features the Spine Lounge Petit by Space Copenhagen (Fredericia Furniture).
When it comes to dinning in New York, authenticity is everything. That’s why we enlisted the experitise of accomplished restaurateur Stephen Starr to create an extraordinary dining etablishment on property. Le Coucou, a collaboration between Starr and internationally acclaimed chef/restaurateur daniel Rose of Spring and La Bourse et La Vie in Paris, is the consummate french experience. A menu of simple yet refined dishes reflects Rose’s personal version of French cuisine aimed a bringing great food and conviviality to the table. An exceptional list of wines and spirits, paired with the utmost of hospitality, takes dining at Le Coucou to the next level. Designed by Rowan and Williams, guests can enjoy a spectacular meal in the most charming of settings.
